Why do people think it's okay to let their cats run free?
They make excuses like "it's natural for them to roam" and "they need exercise", but think it would be ridiculous if you let a dog roam free. Cats do deserve to go outside. Why can't people be responsible owners and exercise their cats the same way dog owners do. By playing with them and walking them. It's not okay for a dog to defecate in someones yard so why is it okay to let your cat?
some people also believe that dogs should be kept outside all the time. Which is why every year the SPCA responds to calls of dogs chained outside in the blistering heat or freezing cold. Where I live some people think beagles need to be starved in order to hunt because it's their " instincts" it doesn't make it right.
in my city there is a bylaw requiring all pets to be supervised when outside. I take my cats to the country and I sure as hell wouldn't let them out alone there. Too many bears, foxes, and even hungry gun shy beagles that have been let loose could kill them. Not to mention the cars, snares, people and number of other dangers.
I really think people who let their cats out unattended just want the animal with out the responsibility. Cats are domestic animals not wild animals. The reason the UK doormouse is at risk is thanks to people letting their cats roam free. Many song bird populations are also suffering as result. Yes it is a cats instinct to kill but because they are domesticated and well fed they kill for pleasure most of the time not food.
As for the " people have always let cat's out" argument, people used to traditionally drown kittens too, does that mean it's okay not to spay or neuter and just drop the next litter in the nearest river? Shooting troublesome or old dogs used to be acceptable too, doesn't mean it still is.
I think owners of outdoor cats just want a cat with out all the responsibilities. Those who say house cats suffer and are neglected haven't met the vast majority of house cats.
Walking a cat isn't that hard.
both cats and dogs can cause the same amount of damage to people and property. They are a hazard to drivers when they stray to the roads. They are a danger to kids when they decide to use a playground or family backyard as a litter box. They can kill birds kept on farms or even rabbits
Why is it indoor cats on average live longer but people still argue that letting them outside is better?
