Subdivision in Broussard, LA Fights for City Water Rights
Louisiana has been in the news a lot in recent years, first with Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, and more recently because of all the Mississippi flooding they've been forced to deal with. Even though most people are aware of the news coverage, they truly have no idea what it's like to live down there. Another type of water crisis is occurring within one subdivision in Broussard, LA, which you've probably never even heard about, though. In this unannexed community water problems have become so dire that people can no longer continue to live the way they have been. It is vital that something be done about the situation quickly.
Although this subdivision is completely surrounded by Broussard, it has not been annexed to the city. Thanks to the fact that commercial areas bring in more revenue, the city has concentrated most of its efforts on annexing them. That has left the people of the subdivision out in the cold, so to speak, when it comes to sharing the clean, fresh water available in the rest of the town. The water they have access to isn't even suitable for bathing or laundry let alone cooking. If the residents happen to bathe in the water, they may develop blisters and sores because of it.
Residents haven't stood idly by as they've tried to find ways to overcome these problems. They have installed private water filtration systems, but the filters turn brown very quickly which means the price of operation is prohibitive. Although drinking bottled water may seem like a good solution, some residents don't enjoy the added expense that it requires. This water isn't even suitable for doing laundry since it makes the clothes even dirtier. The city has yet to listen to their calls for annexation so that they can have access to fresh water.
The main reason that they've yet to annex them is because of money, the reason behind most things these days. Although the Broussard water system operates well, it could not be stretched to cover the annexed subdivision without a great cost. There isn't enough money to fix the problem thanks to the fact that Louisana doesn't have any property taxes. You're probably wondering what the homeowners in this subdivision are supposed to do about the problem.
