litter train ferrets?
My boyfriend has 4 ferrets, ranging from about 1 to 2 years old & none of which are really litter trained. We have a small 1 bedroom apartment & they're restricted to the kitchen/living room area. There are practically litter boxes in all corners of our apartment but it doesn't seem to help. They all at least go next to the box but not usually in the box, except for the oldest male (dummy) which seems to just run around & go wherever he is at that time, including the middle of our carpeted floor or couch. We've tried natures miracle to clean up the accidents but they don't seem to smell the area before they go, they just run over & go. We've also tried setting out food dishes in areas to discourage them from going there but they just play in them & make more of a mess. Same thing with the puppy training wee-wee pads, they just tear them up & play in them. Any suggestions?
Ferrets are terrible to litter train. Plus their 3 hour metabolism means they poop 8 times a day (3x8=24 hour day). I suggest when you wake them up to take them out to run around first put them in the bathroom or even the bathtub until they go. Unless they free range all day, then you need to be on them about when they ate and how long they've been out and try to corral them every few hours in a place where they can go.
For litter boxes, ferrets do not cover their feces like cats do, and they do not like to climb over the sides of the box. What's worked for me is the almost flat lid of medium rubbermaid tubs. Its got just enough of a lip to hold the pee in it until I can dump it. try putting some of those in favorite spots.
Cleanup is much easier with Spot Shot than any of those supposed urine removers. I don't think ferrets have a strategy for marking their territory with urine or scratching or anything of the sort. They just go in a favorite spot when they want and anywhere convenient when they don't.
