Small Dog Coat
Puppies and cold weather?
My puppy is finally old enough to start going for walks outside but I live in a very cold city and I'm worried it might be too cold for him...I bought him a small dog coat but I'm concerned about his feet. Of course I see other dogs walking outside and they seem fine, but should I be more concerned since he's small (3 1/2 months)? What's the maximum amount of time I can walk him in the cold?
The puppy coat is a good idea. Just like people, when they are exercising, they are generating some body heat. They do make little boots for dogs, to help to keep their feet dry and mud free. The boots are also a good protection from some of the chemicals that people put down to melt ice, etc. It can take some getting used to...they walk awfully funny at first, but there are boots available. A good rule of thumb for length of time outdoors is that, when you are feeling cold, it is also time for the puppy to go inside, providing that all essential details have been tended to (if you know what I mean). The boots are not a necessity, but, it would be a good idea to clean your dog's feet off after a walk in the winter. Those chemicals can do some damage to the pads of your dogs feet, and even be toxic, if your dog should try to lick them off.
