Service Dog Vest
Why do some service dog vests say "please pet me" and others say "Do not pet" or "ask before petting"?
i've seen all 3, why do the "Therapy dog,[or "therapy dog in training] please pet me" ones say that? why dont they just say "ask to pet" like the other ones? im not sure i'd like some random stranger just petting my dog.....
if it matters, by "therapy dog" i mean one that is for an indevidual person, not for hospitals.
Bare Nekkid TRUTH!: no. im asking because my friends kid is getting a theraspy dog, and yes it can be used for ONE person, because thasts what his theropist told his mother, and her boss agrees to it.
oh, sorry, i ment Emotional support dogs. i got confused, lol.
Okay, it sounds like you are confused about terminology in addition to wanting an answer to your question.
A Therapy Dog is a dog that goes to hospitals, nursing homes, residential treatment centers, etc. to provide animal assisted therapy or simply comfort to the people using the services of the place the dog is at. These dogs are essentially highly trained volunteers that accompany their handlers who are also volunteers. Therapy dogs have no public access rights and can only go into places to provide therapy with permission from the director of the hospital, nursing home, treatment center etc. These dogs often wear identifying gear such as capes, special collars, or bandannas that identify them as a therapy dog so that patients know that the dog is there to provide therapy and isn't simply someone's pet that has been snuck in. They tend to have "Please Pet Me" patches instead of "Ask To Pet" so that patients know that it is all right to pet and interact with the dog.
An Emotional Support Dog (ESA) provides emotional support and comfort to an individual disabled person. ESAs do not have to have a lot of training aside from basic pet manners such a potty training, no excessive barking, no aggression, not destructive, and similar manners. It certainly helps to have obedience training but it is not necessary...just as it helps for the average household pet to have obedience training. ESAs do not have any public access rights unless the owner of a business gives permission prior to the dog coming into the building. The only benefits these dogs have is that they can live in no-pets housing and they can fly in the cabin of an airplane with their owner but both benefits require documentation of a disability by a doctor. Because these dogs are not allowed to go into public places, they rarely wear any type of identifying gear...including a vest that says "Please Pet Me" or "Do Not Pet."
A Service Dog is a dog that is trained to mitigate the disability of an individual person. This would include guide dogs, hearing assistance dogs, mobility dogs, medical alert dogs, autism dogs, psychiatric service dogs, and more. In addition to basic pet manners and obedience training, these dogs are trained to perform specific tasks that mitigate an individual's disability. For example, a hearing assistance dog could alert its handler to a fire alarm or microwave beep but the handler must have a hearing disability for this to be legitimate. Just like a person who is not legally blind cannot use a guide dog. Service dog handlers are allowed to take their dog into public places just like a person with a wheelchair is allowed to use the wheelchair in a public place. These dogs often, but are not required to, wear vests or harnesses that identify them as a service dog and also include patches that can say "Do Not Pet" or "Ask To Pet." The type of patch is a decision made by the handler of the service dog. Some service dog handlers do not want anyone to pet their dog so they use the "Do Not Pet" patch. Sometimes this decision is made because the dog becoming distracted by being pet could be dangerous for the handler is the dog fails to provide assistance due to such a distraction. Some handlers do not mind if a person pets their dog with permission so they use the "Ask To Pet" patch. However, these handlers have every right to deny a person from petting their dog and often will because they are busy or they are concentrating on a problem with their disability that may not be apparent to another person. For example, anyone who is grocery shopping does not want to stop and allow every person in the store to admire their fancy shoes...it would take all day to finish shopping! It would be even worse if you were developing a headache and wanted to get home and take some medicine but couldn't because everyone wanted to look at your cool shoes.
I hope this clarifies the confusion about the patches on vests and also the confusion about the types of working dogs.
