Crocheted Scarf Sizes?

I finished my scarf I was working on. Came out very pretty. My friends daughters want a scarf just like the one I made for myself but im not exactly sure on the length I should do for them. I had to chain 300 for the scarf. Its 77 inches in length; 94 with the fringe. The girls ages are 3 and 9, but they're tall fro their ages. What would be a good length to make their scarves? Thank you for your time in advance.

About 40" should be an acceptable length.

I'm leery of letting little kids use scarves because of the danger of hanging them up on something and choking a child who isn't facile enough to get out of the loop. Perhaps a cowl would work better for the 3-year-old?
