Dog Door - How to Get the Right Size for Your Pet
If want to install a dog door inside your home, you need to choose the appropriate size, locking settings, material, and color that suits your home.
Size and size-cut matters - measure your dog for a comfortable "fit"
Dog doors are available in various sizes, some can accommodate large dogs, some perfect for small dogs - that's a large spectrum or varying heights and shoulder widths to choose from. Is your dog as big as a small horse - then consider getting large dog doors for your pet. You may want to think about a custom-order dog, especially if yours is really a big dog, with a capital B. Since the large dog doors usually already come at an extra large size, there's not much adjustment to do.
But if your getting the usual dog door that fits most small and medium sized dogs, that means you get to choose a size cut that fits your dog. This means you need to measure your dog's height (from foot to head while it's standing on all fours) and the width of its shoulders. A majority of dog doors are sold with or comes with size cut guides that list weight range, height, and shoulder width. After you measure your dog's relevant dimensions, follow the guide.
There's probably no one who knows your pet better than you do, but just to be on the safe size, if you make a mistake and choose a smaller cut size of the dog door for your pet, you could end up inconveniencing your dog. You don't want your pet to kneel and crawl like a thief sneaking into a hole that's too tight.
It's not rare for pets to barge through an opening when they think they can fit right through. That happens when they're playing. With an ill-sized dog door, your pet might get injured or hurt needlessly. If it's running away from an intruder or another dog, that ill-sized dog door can be a hassle.
Soft or hard flaps - your choice
When you own a multitude of dogs and have a fenced backyard or garden, then your pets may have a play-run route around and even through your home. It's recommended that a soft flap be used, so that the dogs in play can ram themselves through the soft flap if needed. For small home with over-energetic dogs that may abuse a soft flap, it's recommended you use a hard flap.
Security matters - choose a dog door with lock settings
Flaps swing both ways, but dog doors with added lock setting can be configured. You can set it up to lock after your dog comes home at night, so the dog can't leave again. Or you can do the reverse if you shoo them away because you're vacuuming the house. You should think about getting an automatic door if you're still worried about forced entry of other animals. Your pet will be allowed to pass through the door since it unlocks in response only to your pet.
