Pet Residence
i am entrusted for an unspecified time period with the care of 2 african grey parrots, advice please?
the birds know me well, as used to care for them at their own home- the reason i have them is that their owner is having both financial and health problems and has to move to a no pets residence.
here is my only problem so far: one of the birds has obvious separation anxiety. he keeps trashing his cage, and uncharacteristically tries to bite- he has also called his 'dad's' name a few times and will not play with me in the usual manner. it has only been 1 day, will he be okay? and what can i do to comfort him w/o losing a finger or 2?
Go down and buy some fruit and honey sticks with the seed and some other treats, like fresh fruit. Get him a new shiny toy, preferably one he cannot thrash easily. Maybe make one from some shiny old jewelry you may have.
Talk to him or whistle to him from other places in the house throughout the day, so he knows you are there, and of course, when you are in the room.
I think I would give him some time to get readjusted. They do not like change. And most of all, keep your hands and fingers away from the cage for a while. Work your way back into his heart slowly and with great care, without letting him know you may be afraid of loosing a finger.
I think, if he knows you already you will do just fine with a little time. They rarely forget anything.
