Pet Cremation

pet cremations please help?
My cat I have had over 10 years sadley has gotten kidney cancer and I can tell he wont be around much longer no matter how much I wanna deny it-he just dosent act the same and has grown very sick. I have recently looked into cremations and I am unsure how to go about all this. I have looked into creamtories in my area- its a bit overwhelming and extreamly upsetting planing my babies death when it hasent even happend yet. I know I for sure want to have him cremated but when the day comes I dont wanna be scrambling wondering what to do. How does this work? I know you cant make appts for this- since you cant really plan the date for when it will happen. Anyone with any information would be appreciated. And any kind words on how to help me cope with this would be great because I am not taking this well, I am extreamly close with him and I am not sure I am ready for him to go
My heartfelt sympathy to you on your precious kitty's illness.
I lost my oldest kitty to kidney failure a year ago this month and my third oldest to stomach cancer in April. I understand what you are going through.
I had both of them cremated. Yes, you can make an appointment to discuss the cremation with the staff of the pet services. They will explain your options to you and whether you wish to have his cremains returned to you. You can let them know if you wish to have a clip of fur and they will perserve some for you. They also have samples of keepsake urns and keepsake jewelry. You can prepay for the service and this will be one less worry afterwards.
I was having a hard time, just as you are, accepting the first kitty's pending death and I knew I would be in no condition to make her arrangements when she died. I made her arrangements a couple of months before she died and I am glad I did. The staff at the crematorium that handled my kitties was so compassionate and understanding and I spent a lot of time with the director of the pet services. He never rushed me, explained my options and helped me with the choices.
The second kitty I lost went faster than I expected. I knew our time together was short, and the vet estimated we had weeks at the most. Turned out it was only days. So, her arrangements were made after she died. Again, the same compassion and understanding from the staff.
I was able to take both of my kitties to the crematorium myself and I wanted to do this. I felt it was more personal than leaving them with the vet staff to handle. This way I got to kiss them on last time. It will be up to you which is better for you.
Spend as much time as possible with your kitty. Reminise the happy times before he was ill. Talk to him, stroke him and tell him how much you love him, the joy he has brought you and how much you will miss him. Trust me he will understand.
There are some wonderful pet grief websites and I will list my favorites. They have excellent resources to help grieving owners. You can add a memorial of your kitty on each. They have message boards to share and get support from other pet owners. They have lists of support groups by state.
Here is a poem that gave me comfort during the difficult times when my kitties were loosing their battles. I hope it brings you comfort, too.
Purrs and prayer for you and kitty.
Poem For Cats
And God asked the feline spirit
Are you ready to come home?
Oh, yes, quite so, replied the precious soul
And, as a cat, you know I am most able
To decide anything for myself.
Are you coming then? asked God.
Soon, replied the whiskered angel
But I must come slowly
For my human friends are troubled
For you see, they need me, quite certainly.
But don't they understand? asked God
That you'll never leave them?
That your souls are intertwined. For all eternity?
That nothing is created or destroyed?
It just is....forever and ever and ever.
Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever.
