Does Electronic Muscle Stimulation Work?

EMS (electric muscle stimulation) devices are used to induce muscle contractions by using electrical impulses. They are portable devices with detachable electrodes that are used to deliver impulses to the skin. Most often the electrode pads are lubricated before contacting the skin to provide a method of conduction for the electrical current. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) devices seem to be the most common. They have achieved observable benefits for those suffering from sprains, lower back pain and arthritis.

EMS and TENS units are considered devices under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. As such, the FDA is responsible for regulating the sale of these devices throughout the United States. Companies that wish to sell these devices, legally, need to adhere to the FDA's pre-market regulatory requirements. Most EMS (electrical muscle stimulators) that have been reviewed by the FDA are for use by a health care professional for physical therapy and rehabilitation. If a company plans to sell MedWatch Online Voluntary Reporting Form for home use, they would need to prove to the FDA that they can be used safely and effectively in that setting.

The FDA has approved many electrical muscle stimulators for treating certain medical conditions. Doctors use electronic muscle stimulation for such things as muscle re-education, relief of muscle spasms, increasing range of motion, the prevention of muscle atrophy and for treating conditions resulting from stroke, serious injury or major surgery. These devices are generally intended to help patients with impaired muscle function due to some medical condition and not to increase specific muscles enough to affect their appearance.

Any devices which have not been approved by the FDA are not legal. The FDA has not had the opportunity to ascertain if they are safe and effective.

EMS devices are able to tone or firm muscle temporarily, however, so far none of them are confirmed to be able to help you lose weight, reduce the size of your waist or give you "rock hard" abs.

Just using an EMS device on its own will not give you the "six-pack" abs you're hoping for. Applying an electrical current to muscles, however, may cause them to contract. While the repeated stimulation of your muscles using electrical current can tone and strengthen, the only way to actually change your appearance is by eating a sensible diet and doing regular exercise.

The manufacturer of a medical device should be informed of any malfunctions. The FDA also has a voluntary reporting program for medical device malfunctions - MedWatch.
