Months Save
Planning to move to Manhattan from Chicago, and have limited funds to work with. Any advice?
I'm moving so I can pursue a career in fashion. I have a small but decent place here, and I KNOW that what I pay in rent will only get me a room + roomies in NYC. Is it better to just stay with friends over the next several months, save and just make the big move there in spring/summer, or stay where I am and just take trips there to visit over the year and get a feel first? Are nearby burrows like Brooklyn really that bad? I notice rents are totally do-able in New Jersey, which is pretty close to Manhattan, but I have no idea what the best thing is to do.
Some parts of Brooklyn are absolutely gorgeous, and less expensive, as with Queens, although some are not as nice. You may want to start looking in the areas near the colleges-like near St. John's (Union or Queens Blvd. areas),
or near Brooklyn College. In Manhattan, sharing is the best bet, or staying with someone, because it is pricey for someone breaking out in the career world. If you find something in Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Borough Park, the redeveloped section of Williamsburgh, Park Slope and a few other areas of Brooklyn, you can enjoy the apartment, the neighborhood and the short trip to the city...Staying on Staten Island can
be nice except the transportation can be a problem at times (Verrazano traffic can be ridiculous at times, and the only 2 ways to get from that Island to Manhattan is road-whether your own or bus-and ferry).
To test it all out, I would suggest one 3-4 day stay in the city with someone who has a car, if not your own, because you can see Long Island in 1 of those days (including burroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau County) and still enjoy the city itself the other 3 days.
Using the subways in NYC, depending on how well you know the system, won't take more than 40 minutes-1 hour from any place to anyplace for the most part, and may very well be worth it. Because of the excellent mass transit, in any direction--looking for an apartment to rent in someone's house in New Jersey, Staten Island, Long Island (middle-western parts of Nassau County), upstate (Westchester, even southern sections of Orange or Putnam Counties-may help because it is within an hour to get home by rail.
