Breeding Labradors for the Best of the Breed
If you are interested in breeding Labradors then there are some things you should know.If you want to breed dor show Labradors it is especially important to know these things. The goal of breeding Labradors, or any dog, is for the puppy to have the ideal characteristics for which you are looking.However, you need to know which Labrador characteristics are more favorable before breeding otherwise you won't know what dogs to breed for desired results. Learning these traits will help you to be a successful breeder of Labradors. It could be the deciding factor in winning first place at any dog show.
Actually there are some Labrador breeds that would be penalized if taken to a dog show. For instance, the Labrador retriever could be one. The retriever is a medium built dog and does not make a good show dog due to its features. Likewise are the weedy, light dogs, the leggy, tall dogs, the low-stationed, long dogs, and the lumbering, cloddy dogs. These will all earn penalties in the dog shows as they are contradictory to the proportionate and sturdy build of the ideal Labrador.
Certain anatomical characteristics are important when breeding Labradors. The ideal Labrador's head should have a powerful muzzle, broad snout, clean cheeks, and white teeth.The dog's nose color can vary, depending on the dog"s coat color. The nostrils should be wide and open. Kind eyes that are slightly triangular in shape is preferred.Lastly, the ears should drop and be short and triangular in shape.
The key to breeding Labradors is to look for a favorable temperament. This will impress any judge at the dog shows.Retrievers are happy and friendly and these are dogs who like to please others. Labradors are also quite intelligent.At a dog show these are the qualities that judges are looking for in Labradors.
Labradors can be black, chocolate, or yellow.Though yellow dogs may vary in shades of color it is not preferrable and neither are white spots on the chest. Judges do not penalize Labradors that have white hairs because of aging or scarring which is really great news.
Labradors who are bred to a specific weight and height are what judges look for. The judges want to see if the the Labrador is of typical weight and height.For males the height should be no more than twety-four and half inches tall. Sixty-five to eighty pounds is the typical weight for a male dog. For female Labradors, the typical height is between twenty-one and one-half and twenty-three and one-half inches.The ideal weight is fifty-five pounds to seventy pounds for females.
It is important to be aware of dog show criteria when you are breeding Labradors. For the best results you want to be able to breed certain characteristics and traits. Breeding Labradors can be a challenge, but it can be very rewarding if you are successful and achieve your goals.
