Large dog pet owners......?
how do you wash your dogs tug rope? ours was so dirty its black so I soaked it in some diswasher detergent (it had a bleachy smell. The kind that goes in the dishwashing machine. Anyways,I think it probably wont rinse good enough and the dog will end up sucking on a bleachy rope. How do you deal with this nonsense? Oh, the dog had is tuggy rope next to his pile of poop outside... nice huh.
I put all my dogs' accessories (blanket, towels, leads if necessary) in the washing machine together. I use ordinary laundry liquid, no bleach and no fabric conditioner. I do an extra rinse before the final spin.
I see no reason why you shouldn't wash his tug rope in the same way. There is no need to use bleach as dogs are not prone to food poisoning in the same way as humans. Because their gut is designed to digest meat and even bone, the high level of acidity is not conducive to the growth of the type of bacteria that can cause food poisoning.
I have a long length of natural hemp rope which I use to make knotted tugs for my dogs. As soon as the tug becomes very damaged or too dirty, I make a new one. These toys cost almost nothing, compared to £2 -£3 for a toy from a pet-shop. My dogs love to destroy their toys, so this makes more sense in my case.
