potty training a puppy?
I'm getting a puppy, and i am a student so i would be gone for about 6 1/2 hours Monday through Friday. i'm planning on asking a neighbor to let the puppy out to go to the bathroom around lunchtime for a couple of months. So being let out in the morning, at lunch, when i get home in the afternoon, and before bedtime, is that enough? We're limiting the puppy to one room while we're not home in a pen with housebreaking pads, for accidents, and a crate for sleeping. I just want to make sure our new puppy gets off to a good start with house training, any advice?
during the 6 hours i'm gone a neighbor will come buy halfway thorugh 6 hours, so that works good right?
You can figure on for each month the puppy has is the length of time it can hold off going potty. If your puppy is 2 months old it will need to potty every 2 hours. Some people say that putting a dog in a crate is the best way but I really dont see how since you are teaching the puppy that it is fine to potty where it sleeps. I have 2 dobermans. The father and son. When I brought the dad home as a pup I kept him inside but had the side door open at all times and showed him how to go in and out. I had to keep my eye on him constantly for the first 3 days. Each time I saw him sniff around I would tell him " Potty outside" and then I would take him outside and wait with him until he pottied and then praised him. Like I said it took 3 days and he was trained but at all times had access to the outside when ever he needed to go. His son I trained the same way. I also had them sleep with me for those first 3 days so they wouldnt have any accidents during the night since they would start to move on the bed and I would rush them outside. I am afraid that having your neighbor come over and let the pup out every now and then isnt going to be enough. You have to be on them every second for those first few days so they never ever potty in the house. If they never ever have the chance to potty inside they learn right away that the house is not a bathroom. They also need easy access to the outdoors. Also remember a new puppy is going to cry a few days or more like cry and howl when ever it is alone which is going to drive all your neighbors crazy. Since your neighbor seems pretty nice maybe he or she might be willing to keep the pup at their house during the day while you are not there and this way they can take it out every hour so there are no house accidents also the pup wont being crying since it wont be alone. If that is not a choice then I would if anything put newspapers on the floor in the bathroom and keep the pup in there during the day. I dont see why someone would want to put a pup in a crate at night to sleep. All that does is teach a dog that sure its cool to poop where he sleeps. In all reality pups are a big responsibility. If the pup is going to be an indoor dog you have to put the time into teaching him how to be indoors and by you not being home all day that is going to be alittle bit hard . Not impossible but hard. Puppies are just like little kids and need alot of attention or they go nuts. They need company. I would run the idea across to your neighbor about being a babysitter during the day for a week.
Dont put your puppy in a crate , that is just so mean to me not only that when you let it out of the crate it is going to go nuts after being locked up. If you are going to have a pen set up you dont need a crate for it to sleep. Remember they potty at least every two hours and right after they eat. When you see it start to sniff around quick run it outside. Try to never let it have any accidents in the house.
