Why Make an Ergonomic Office? Because of the Benefits!
The average person working in an office spends eight to nine hours a day sitting in front of a desk with a computer and monitor. Even more time is spent by IT and computer industry employees, who often average twelve to thirteen hour days in the office. It is a basic fact of the human body - bad posture from sitting, repetetive typing without support, and peering at a monitor at the wrong angle can cause a lot of pain (as many workers have discovered over the past few years). Lower back pain from bad chairs, spinal alignment issues due to the angle of the monitor, and carpal tunnel syndrome from typing are all common physical problems that often occur at the work place.
The rise in physical complaints that were discovered to be caused by incorrect postures at the office led to the birth of Ergonomics – the study of people and their working environments. As the number of office workers has risen rapidly over the past twenty years, so did the popularity of the ergonomic office. Several countries have even passed legislation requiring companies to upgrade their office standards to meet ergonomic guidelines.
There are many benefits in creating ergonomic offices. The most obvious benefits are physical. An ergonomic office can significantly lower repetitive stress injuries such as carpal tunnel and posture problems. There are many psychological and emotional benefits, however.
Physical Benefits:
Creating an ergonomic office has enormous physical benefits. Our bodies are much better aligned when using ergonomic office products. All the difference in the world can be made by using the correct chair and the correct angle in an adjustable desk. A life of pain can become a life of ease. Ergonomic office chairs, for example, support the lower back and place the body in the correct posture. A good ergonomic chair should keep the knees lower than the hips and provide lumbar support. Many other chairs do not do this. Adjustable computer desks enable the worker to tilt their monitor and keyboard to the best angle for their height. If this is not done, many workers suffer from neck and shoulder problems from peering at their monitor at the wrong angle.

Ergonomic lighting design creates a soothing rather than harsh atmosphere, lowering stress and keeping the employee happy. In addition, the relief from the physical ailments that accost modern day office workers and the comfortable environment raise the morale of all workers. The worker feels appreciated, as the office is designed around him and his needs, and will often repay this appreciation by working harder and with more dedication, always a plus in any company. It is not easy to measure emotional benefits, but they do run deep. Happy workers are productive workers, and rest assured that workers are much happier in an ergonomic office.
Psychological Benefits:
Emotional and psychological benefits may often be confused. They are often intertwined. An ergonomic office can literally cause a psychological shift in the employee, since it is designed around him. Organizational psychologists have been claiming for years that employees who feel appreciated, whether in their salary or by other means, are also the most productive. Aside from a blazing high salary, perhaps the best possible way to make your worker feel appreciated is to design an office around their needs. If the work environment is beneficial and pleasant, employees will often arrive early and leave late. They will arrive bright eyed and bushy tailed if their workstation is comfortable. And most importantly, an employee that perceives that his employer has his best interest at heart will be loyal and loathe to leave. This is perhaps the most important psychological aspect of any workplace.
Whether you represent a company or are a work-at-home self employed individual, creating an ergonomic office is an investment. However, as more and more companies move towards ergonomic environments, it is becoming an absolute necessity. We now take great care in our nutrition and physical well being, as gym memberships and organic food purchases are on the rise. It seems obvious that the one place we spend more than a third of our day, the office, should be a place that promotes our well being, be it physical, emotional, or psychological.
