do wire fox terriers have to be handstrip?
hi i might be getting a wire fox terrier. i head they should be handstripped to keep the coat nice. i am not going to be showing the dog or anything. he/she is just going to be a companion dog/family dog. do you NEED to get it handstripped? if yes where. that only place that i know of in my area that grooms dogs/cats is petsmart. do they handstripped dogs?
If you want your dog to have that "hard" terrier coat, resistant to weather, bramble, and burrs, then it will need to be hand-stripped. If you don't care about the coat's texture or function, you can get it clipped short at any groomer's for a reasonable price. Most groomers do not know how to hand-strip a terrier properly, I wouldn't suspect that any groomer at a chain store would know how to do it.
I'm personally a big fan of the owner grooming their own dog as it promotes bonding, reinforces training and control, and can be done for free on an as-needed basis. If you are getting your pup from a reputable breeder or a purebred rescue group (or can find either in your area to mentor you) they should be able to help you purchase a stripping knife and teach you the proper technique so that it is enjoyable and easy for your and your dog.
