Grave Marker

What is the proper etiquette concerning put a rock on a grave marker if the marker is a flat metal plate?

I know that if the grave marker is a upright tombstone, a rock can be left on top of the tombstone. Is the same thing done if the marker is a flat metal plate lying on the ground? There are some cemeteries that require that the marker be a flat metal plate.

I am referring to leaving a rock as a sign that someone visited the grave.

No mean answers pls.

I've seen some markers with so many stones and rocks on them the name is obscured. It's almost a popularity contest with some!
A little pebble will do; some leave some personal thing under a nearby rock.
I've buried a personal memento near the marker under the soil.
Cemeteries discourage larger rocks that may scratch or mar markers or bronze plates and allow for easier maintenance but almost anything goes!
