Extra Large Dog
Extra Large breed dog food?
I've got a boxer/lab mix puppy and a great dane puppy on the way and am considering an irish wolfhound puppy. I've done a lot of research on large breed nutrition and I'm not seeing any definitive answers online. I'm wanting to buy them the highest quality dog food with the highest protein because it's the next best thing to raw, but I'm worried about possible repercussions of too much. So my question is for the extra large dog owners; have you had any issues with and dog foods especially high protein and what would you recommend from your own experience?
I read the greatdanelady site and it's not very informative when it comes to real life examples of issues from bad diets. I would like real examples from people who've actually had issues from too much protein in their dog or negative effects for whatever diet reason.
Get your Dane puppy on a good quality ADULT food NOT a puppy food not even large breed. Puppy foods contain too much calcium/phosphorous. It isn't the protein level you need to be concerned about as long as that protein is coming from meats & meat proteins and not from grains.
Some good choices: Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul Regular Adult or Large Breed Adult, Canidae ALS, Wellness Super5 Mix, Fromm 4 Star, California Natural, Innova, Merrick, Earthborn, Taste of the Wild, Orijen just to name a few.
Stay well away from foods that contain corn, wheat, soy, beet pulp, by products, animal digest, added sugar, dyes or animal fats.
Just a side note much of the info on the Great Dane lady's site is outdated and far too complicated. It also promotes products with which she has an affiliation.
