Dog Large
What can be done for an older dog (large poodle) who's elderly owner is dying?
My friend, Daisy, is in a coma. She's been in the hospital since Wednesday. It is unlikely that she will recover. She had talked about having her dog, Puffin, put down if she got to where she could not take care of it. I would always say "Oh no! Please don't ever do that!" But Puffin is not friendly with anyone else. She will allow another friend of mine, Glenda, to pet her on occasion. She snarls at most people. Glenda has been like a daughter to Daisy, so she has the responsibility of doing what's best for Puffin. She also thinks Puffin is not going to adapt to anyone else. She goes to Daisy's house to feed her and let her out everyday. Puffin is grieving big time. She's chewing on the door frame and is whining so sadly. I told Glenda I'd come here and ask for advice. Glenda can't take Puffin and no one else is accepted by Puffin. Any advice...even the hard kind?
Such a sad, sad situation for all concerned. I really hate to say this, but Puffin is probably going to grieve herself to death if something happens to her owner. To me the most humane thing to do here is to take her to the vet and let her quietly go to sleep. It is better than watching her suffer from grieving over Daisy and that is exactly what she will do. It sounds as if Muffin will never get used to anyone else and could possibly bite someone. I wish I had a better answer.
