Joint Pain in Pets: Is It All Genetic?
The proverbial saying stating that a dog is a man's best friend rings true for many people. Children already idolize their four-legged friends from a young age. Hip dysplasia has parallel characteristics but is a condition that influences the hip instead of the elbow joints. It is commonly found in many breeds - specifically larger ones like Great Danes and German Shepherds. This illness causes the joints to become inflamed and painful.
Most cases usually appear in the pet at eighteen months of age but can develop at a later stage as well. Canines will experience stiffness, especially in the mornings, and will try to limit movement as much as possible. Some will avoid running or climbing stairs. Both hip and elbow dysplasia can result in osteoarthritis.
Luckily, these conditions can be reduced in various ways. Managing weight can greatly reduce joint pain in dogs. Anti-inflammatory medication also serves to make the animals more comfortable. Surgery can also be the answer in certain cases. It is advised to speak to a veterinarian first, as they will be able to recommend the best treatment for one's four-legged friend. Your vet will help you create a treatment plan that is best for your pet.
