how can i stop my two year old westie from attacking the tv?
We have replaced the old tv because there were actually teeth marks on it.......now we have a flat screen that can be pushed further back.......but the problem is still there.....we canot relax and watch tv in peace at all.He is relatively OK during programmes but springs to life when the ads are on especially those with dogs,cats,cars,robots ( these really stress him out ) and little things like bubbles and balloons. As a matter of interest he also barks at airplanes flying by.......he seems to have extra finely tuned hearing and sight.
I had a similar question a few years ago, except that I wanted to know why they no longer chased after the tv programs. I was told that the regular programming is now transmitted at a different wave length than it used to be and the dogs and cats are no longer able to perceive them as they did. But that many of the commercials are still transmitted at the old wave length. What a great way to get the viewers attention to a product by having the animals in the house in an uproar.
When my cat showed too much interest in helicopters on the screen, (she was also damaging the set) we tried muting the sound. It actually worked with her. It was the putter of the blades that was attracting him in the first place.
You could try muting the sound or holding him when the commercials are coming on and distracting him from the ads.
Or a more drastic solution would be to put him on his leash and when he tries to lunge, a sharp, deep, not loud 'NO' until he gets the idea.
