No Bark Collar - Do Static Collars Really Harm Your Dog?
There are definite solutions to dog with barking problems. The device is called a no bark collar and when you purchase one and use it on your dog, the idea is the collar will prevent your dog from barking. The collar sends out annoying stimulations whenever your dog barks - in time the annoyance will not be something the dog looks forward to. As effective static collars can be, some dog owners express concern on whether these collars harm your dog in the process.
Electrical shocks and how it can affect your dog
A bark collar releases one of three stimuli, depending on the type - a harmless spray, a low volt shock, an ultrasonic sound; the static collar is one of these. Sound uses ultrasonic sound only dogs can hear. In some studies, the effectiveness of all three types have been compared; the result is that the sound type seem to lag behind the static and spray type, which are tied for effectiveness.
The are a lot of misleading videos posted online showing people shocking themselves with shock collars. Often only casually filmed, with shots of family members and friends just about to get shocked with a collar they're holding. The moment they walk outside the perimeter, the collar goes off, shocking them. Those people may have yelled in shock, but that's not a barometer of pain - the people filmed may have been exagerrating.
The level of current delivered by a collar, and this is what some dog owners find hard to accept, is no more harmful than the static one feels when rubbing one's feet across a carpet.
The level of shock stimulation can be adjusted
Static collars usually have an adjustment feature - you can increase or decrease the stimulation level as needed. The default setting is calibrated to be the lowest, for safety reasons. Upon the dog owner's observation, if the dog has gotten used to and is barking despite the level of shock, the stimulation level is to be increased. It would still take some vigilance and observation after that, you have to see what settings can efficiently stop the dog from barking. Don't worry because the buzz stops as soon as the dog stops barking.
There's a recommended alternative to static shocks - the spray collar
The fear for one's pet's welfare is often linked to personal experience with shock, that's how some dog owners analyze these bits of information. The foregoing are but info gathered on the static collar; there's nothing wrong with still choosing another kind of collar. There are other types of no bark dog collars out there, ones that do no use a shock as stimulus. Product choice means competition and that's good. As has been stated, the Citronella or spray type collar is just as effective as the static correction type.
