Can a dog hear an anti-bark frequency over the phone?
If I were to have someone hold a phone receiver up to a dog's ear while while I sounded one of those high frequency dog anti-barking devices (inaudible to humans) into my phone from a hundred miles away, would the dog hear and respond to that? I know this sounds like a silly question but a friend and I are arguing about whether or not inaudible sound frequencies can be transmitted over phone lines. I say they cannot but I'm no expert so some outside help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Most phones have quite a bit of filtering of the sound in some form or another. Some more primitive phones even cutoff the uppermost two octaves of human hearing, since it is just extra unnecessary data for the line to handle. They only have the dominantly audible octaves sent through transmission.
You get a more efficient use of the phone line if you don't have as much data per unit time to transmit. Hence, it is favorable to only transmit what you need to transmit, and use filters to keep the rest from going through.
That being said, if the band pass or low pass filter is put to use that cuts off the inaudible dog frequencies, and so it is unlikely that the dog could hear this.
In fact, in modern times, when the DSL modem signals share the line with the phones, you will notice that POTS splitter device that you connect if you have a DSL device and a telephone in the same circuit. POTS = plain old telephone service. It is a low pass filter that blocks the high frequencies used for DSL signals, so that you don't hear annoying high pitched sounds while talking on the phone.
If you or the recipient have a POTS splitter in the phone line circuit, you most certainly will not be able to have the dog whistle frequencies go over the phone lines.
