Which kind of collar/harness is best for dogs?

I have a 45 pound dog that loves to pull, so I have bought her a choke chain, which someone had recommended to me. But, then someone else said choke chains can crush a dog's larynx, and I should use a prong collar with the spikes inside, which look scary to me. Someone else said it's best to use a harness. I'm getting confused! I am a first-time dog owner, and I don't know much about dogs, but I'd like to give my dog the very best care I can. Please help!

Choke collars are pretty much a thing of the past, as you mentioned.
A harness allows the dog to put its weight into it and drag you.
For now the pinch (prong) collar is definitely your best bet.
Head collars (gentle leader, halti) can be used but I believe there have been instances where dogs' necks have been broken.
Most training / obedience classes use the pinch collar and lead, gives the owner CONTROL.
As a first time owner you should probably take an obedience class anyway, since you have a fairly large dog. In class they learn that you are the alpha, as they have to take "orders" from you. You will also be taught how to use the pinch - it isn't as bad as it looks!
