Bark Control Collar - Size Matters, Not Just For Pet Comfort
One day one big dog found a way around its bark collar. Sandy has this great big dog, a St. Bernard with a haughty name - Magnus - and who routinely and loudly barked at dogs he saw through the front gate. It sounded like he owned the street, and every other dog that he could see was violating Magnus' right.
To teach her big dog some barking discipline, Sandy bought a bark control collar. It did work, actually, for an entire week. And then Magnus was back, with a different bark, but loud and relentless like before. Magnus had gotten used to the shock's intensity level. When the dog barked, the static collar would release a buzz, a low volt annoying interruption, which the dog seems to have outsmarted.
Magnus found a way, a work around, by barking not in quick succession, but with pauses, not loudly but in low whooof! barks. Upon reflection, Sandy thought this was the dog's way to shake off his collar, to unsettle the nodes touching the dog's throat. Out came one whooping bark, and then a pause, and then the whooping would resume, like a beat.
The intensity setting on the collar had to be increased since the big dog was tough, and Sandy did just that - spiking it up just right. She also adjusted the collar, so it wouldn't have enough slack to slide around. That stopped Magnus from barking. He had a hard time shaking off that collar - it wouldn't slide around his neck like before. With the nodes of the collar touching Magnus' neck's skin, the activation of the collar could not be momentarily shrugged off, like before.
One could see Magnus was not happy with it. Once he tried to throw a whooping bark, he ended up with an odd, funny look on his face. Magnus has that "what in the world" look, but tried to whip up another bark. Another funny look on his face. Silence made its way back into the house, as weeks passed without so much as whoof from the dog. Sandy showered Magnus with attention right after he showed signs of avoiding his big barks - which Magnus probably loved, too. The barking problem seem to have faded on its own and the big dog was back to simply being a big happy dog.
If you have a stubborn as hell big dog who barks, disregarding his bark collar, you must be intrigued by what Sandy did. When Magnus tried to bark, Sandy watched closely. She the instituted some adjustments which she monitored to see if those affected her dog's barking.
Okay, here's a summary of what Sandy learned from all this. You might need to adjust the intensity settings. The collar must not be hanging loose around your dog's neck. Think about trying a different kind of bark collar, one with spray as stimulus. Consult your vet about the problem.
