Male Betta Is Making Bubblenests without a female?
So I've had my male betta for a good while now and he is always making bubble nests even as I type right now. The thing is I don't have a female at all, is he just happy? He's very active and everything I'm pretty sure he wants a mate. What should I do, allow him to keep making nests alone or get him a mate. He's in a basic tank right now no filters or anything and I do have plant cover.
Bubble nests are entirely instinctive-- they indicate nothing other than that your Betta is alive, and almost definitely a male (some females have been known to blow bubble nests and lay eggs in them on their own). His activity, however, IS a sign of good health (as long as it isn't frantic darting). Unless you have room for a few hundred jars to raise the fry in, food to feed a few hundred baby Bettas, and time to do a few hundred water changes every day, start researching Betta breeding (it isn't as simple as just add water). If not, please don't attempt it, as you'll not only likely end up with a dead fish or two, but possibly a few hundred fry that are doomed.
EDIT: I've seen Bettas in the smallest, coldest, grimiest cups build bubble nests, and had a Betta that, even in a warm, clean, planted tank, refused to build one-- I maintain that these bubbles are no reflection of their health.
